Well done to everyone who skied this year. We have done well and ended up as 4th team. There have also been many individual sucesses whether or not you got a trophy. Decs Huppach – defended his top spot in his age coming 1st in under 10 – fantastic – and coming up the rankings at break neck speed is Jonathon Eaves Alice Nixon 3rd in Under 8 with Corrine Side only 1 point behind her – Alice watch out next year!

Josef Huppach is also moving up the rankings in the Under 8 – well skied Lorna Side 1st in the mature group and Alison Albion 3rd Joely, Robert and Callum – thank you for your contribution to the Pendle scores – a great effort Jo Nixon did well in the U12 and improved his overall ranking despite missing some months. Chris Corr missed 2 months but came 2nd in U14 one month and ended up in group 1 in the afternoon – brilliant Ed wilson finished 4th but missed 2 months – if only…….

David Eaves finished 5th in his group but only 1 point off 4th and 2 points off 3rd – next year a little more wax and sharper edges please! Stephen Whittles and Geof Side did well and would have been up in the medals if they had raced each month.

A mention must be made to some other s who have helped out the Pendle teams whenever possible – Mark and Chris Lomax, Kaigan and Callum Witts and new racers this year Stephen Ibrams, Georgia Whittles, Kelly Wiseman (I’m sure you can persuade your dad to do it next year) David Bolton and not forgetting Stefan Huppach.

To say that small number of club members have been busy over the summer would be an understatement. All the top section of the slope has been taken up, re-profiled and re-laid in some awful weather conditions over the last three months. Our appreciation and thanks must go out to each and every one of them. Not only have they done the job ready for the start of season for us all to enjoy, they have done a ‘proper job’, which is to their credit. Having spoken recently to skiers from other dry slopes, I can confirm that the condition of the matting at Pendle is the envy of them all. If there are any members out there who would like to be involved in future working parties please let us know and you will be welcomed with open arms.

There has also been work on the nursery slope with the top third being replaced.

A new helmet storage unit has been installed, the floor made good and painted. So I think we are almost ready for the start of the season! All we need now is you.

Oct 2008

Welcome Back!

After a summer(!) of great sporting events I am sure you are all itching to get back to carving up the slopes in time for your deserved winter breaks. The time is almost upon you to dig out your salopettes, find that ski jacket and dry out your gloves to get in some practice, or a few lessons to make yourself ‘Winter Ready’.

During the ‘closed season’ a huge amount of hard work goes on behind the scenes ensuring that the club and it’s slopes are well prepared and ready for the winter. ALL of this is carried out by the Clubs members as unpaid volunteers – NO financial recompense is made to the league of people who give up their free time to ensure the Club is in a position to open at the beginning of October. Their only reward, a voucher to be offset against the cost of skiing at the Club. Even a small club like Pendle requires a vast number of people to keep things operational! This summer over 200 new mats have been laid on the main slope, over 60 tonnes of stone has been hand-balled by wheel barrow from the car park to the bottom of the slope to then be used to prepare the ground under the slope, over 1350 square metres of weed control fabric has been laid to prevent the grass from growing through onto the slope and over 60 misting jets have been replaced to help maintain our position as one of the ‘BEST’ dry ski slopes in the country! But, it did not stop there the pathways have been cleared, back filled and finished off with sustainable matting to make them more user friendly, the nursery slope has been cleared and cleaned of debris and many of the mats have been re-laid for longevity. The club house has been re-plastered and, as I write this, the decorators are preparing to come in and give the interior a fresh lick of paint. Hopefully, by the season start, the clubhouse floor will have been renewed also. In addition to this the club has invested in another £5000 worth of new skis and ski boots for it’s members.

Every penny of the money spent on the club is provided by its members! If you take into account that the materials used on the slope add up to well over £30,000 this year alone you can begin to see where the club is sometimes forced to ‘make do’ with some items for quite some time. Whilst trying to keep membership to an affordable level, yet ensuring that investment in the club does not fall too far short of the mark! It is the committee’s intention to ensure, at least over the next couple of seasons that this re-investment continues. Next ‘closed season’ weMUST re-position and replace the steps coming down to the clubhouse, the toilet facilities MUST be improved, we NEED improved viewing areas outside and we MUST make a decision regarding the clubhouse. Pendle Ski Club is not a commercial operation, it is YOUR Club, you have an opinion, your committee is there to run the Ski Club on your behalf, if you feel that you can contribute, speak to a committee member or put your thoughts in writing to the committee, we meet once a month to discuss the day to day operations, plan for the future and wellbeing of the club.

As often happens during the season, we find ourselves ‘busy fools’ trying to keep up with demand, to help with this, one of the club notice boards is being used to keep everyone informed about what goes on at the club on each day, maybe there is a lesson you didn’t know about!! If you find that you are in a position to volunteer to help out, maybe serving behind the counter, helping do the laundry etc, please make yourself known to the duty officer.

As many of you are well aware, Pendle Ski Club has a fine tradition of racing within its membership and to maintain this, the Club has this year won the All England Club Trophy in a hard fought, thrilling head to head race off at the All England Championships held in Norwich! Congratulations to the ‘A’ team of Andy Roose, Brad Morgan, Dan Wyatt and Emily Whitelock, and no small mention to Carl Ryding, Colin Tee and Lyndsey Allen who train, nurture and encourage the racers throughout the season. Look for the ‘Race section’ of this newsletter to learn more about the success of the club and its racers! One of the clubs main reasons behind it’s racing success is the large number of racers who regularly attend race training, remember, if you or your children are club members and would like to look at racing we hold an introductory race training on Tuesday evening from 6.00 p.m. to 7.00 p.m., ask your instructor if they feel you are up to the task!!

Finally, Open Day falls on the 5th October this year, First half hour ‘taster session’ begins at 10.00a.m. with the last session starting at 3.30p.m. The BBQ will be lit early and we’ve put a request in for clear skies(!) Why not encourage friends, work colleagues or relations to come over and try skiing or snow-boarding, at only £2.00 for an adult or £1.00 for a child, it makes a cheap day out!!

I look forward to seeing you all at your Ski Club!

Paul Rayson
